Magical Lantern Festival Leeds-time to dust off the tripod

November 25, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Last night was like the old college days - tripod dusted off and out into the cold to take night pictures!

Unlike 28 years ago, in my days on the NCTJ photo-journalism course in Sheffield with an old Nikon FM2 and Ilford b+w film, I had my Nikon D4 and the luxury of digital - and being able to see what I was shooting on the back screen.

I was commissioned last night to shoot the newly arrived Magical Lantern Festival just up the road from me in Roundhay Park.

Lots of long exposures, and fiddling around with the tripod and here are some of the results. Thanks Tony Johnson (YP staffer) for modelling!

The amazing light displays on show at the Magical Lantern Festival in Roundhay Park, Leeds.

The festival is an outdoor Christmas themed event, with a fusion of art, heritage and culture.

Visitors will follow a trail around the park exploring giant lanterns, which represent Christmas, traditional Chinese culture and the 200 year heritage of lantern festivals.

The festival runs until January at Roundhay Park, Europe's largest city park.

Hanging out of a car for The Sun

November 01, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Had fun on a recent shoot which involved lots of hanging out of a moving car to take my pics!

The commission was for The Sun and their Motors page, and we spent a morning at a park in South Yorkshire snapping the new rather lovely VW Tiguan.

After persuading a chap to drive me at speed in front of the Tiguan, on a private road of course, I managed to squeeze out of the back window for some nice panning shots.

Then we found a rural road shut off for roadworks - for some traffic free shots from road level.

Here are a few of the pics.

Our family of urban fox cubs who have just woken up and made an appearance in the garden.

Only spotted them once so far but they disappeared that day as I grabbed my camera.

Three cubs spotted, there were five last year.
